Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit organization that strives to build houses for underprivileged families. Habitat For Humanity in Sinarmas World Academy is a student-led organization that raises funds through events and sponsorships, all the while working closely with Habitat For Humanity Indonesia to build decent housing in Indonesia.
Throughout the year, students who are a part of this CAS group fundraise and find sponsors in order to raise enough money for a goal of building 3 houses each year. As the students are closely approaching their goal in 2016, they are currently able to fund the development of 2 houses. As part of the partnership, they will also be visiting the village and working with the Habitat for Humanity team for a hands-on experience in the building of the houses they have sponsored.
March 2017 Update
On Friday, 3 March 2017, members of SWA’s Habitat for Humanity CAS group traveled to Mauk Village in North Tangerang to build a house for a less fortunate family. Students raised Rp 36,000,000 over the last semester to participate in this build. Along with students from SPH, SWA students worked on digging the foundation, cutting and bending iron for the cement reinforcements, and laying down large rocks before the cement could be poured in place. The next build in May will involve completing the house. Congratulations to the HFH students on their perseverance and agency in tackling global issues!
March 2016 Update
On 8 March 2016, twelve SWA students accompanied by a teacher went to Mauk in northern Tangerang to help build housing through Habitat for Humanity Indonesia. With masonry tools, buckets of cement, and pick axes, these students worked tirelessly for hours to stack cement blocks and clear debris for two houses.
The beneficiaries, along with the villagers, were extremely grateful for the students who raised IDR 30,000,000 for the build. In mid-April, another set of SWA students will partake in a second Habitat for Humanity build. If you are interested in more information or sponsoring future builds, please contact SWA grade 11 student, Elaine Liman at email@example.com
