IB DIPLOMA AUTHORIZATION
SWA is authorized as an IB World School. With the successful authorization of SWA's International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in January, we have achieved another major step toward the overall vision of the school.
The three day authorization visit was a comprehensive review of the schools preparedness to deliver the IBDP to our Grade 11 and 12 students beginning this August 2010.
The report and the recommendations recognize the hard work by the SWA IB team. The current Grade 10 students will soon be receiving detailed advice as to what subjects they can consider choosing for Grade 11 and 12 studies.
New students have been trialled who wish to join SWA for Grade 11, which provides a strong cohort of students starting the Diploma Programme next year.
We continue to focus on our education program and are working on preparations for the upcoming pre-authorization visits for the IB PYP and MYP at SWA that are scheduled for May this year.
These further authorizations will help us to ensure that we are meeting international standards and at the same time building a relevant and coherent curriculum for our student body.
JAKARTA WORLD ACADEMY LAUNCH
On Saturday, March 6, Jakarta World Academy will be hosting its launch party to celebrate the opening of Jakarta World Academy’s Admissions Center. This will take place in the Thamrin Nine ballroom (UOB).
An Enchanted Forest will set the scene for this special occasion. SWA Pre K - Grade 1 students have been invited to perform several short songs, as part of the special 'Dancing Dragons' performance.
sStudents will dress up as characters from a favourite fairy tale to complement the party theme. With their parents, SWA students can also enjoy the entertainment and food in the ballroom.
SWA Middle School and High School students are helping to supervise activities and a selection of Elementary students will be performing in the Dragon Choir.
Families of the students involved in the launch are all invited to this exciting event.
STUDYWIZ WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS
Last Tuesday, February 16, there was a Studywiz Workshop for all parents from Grades 5, 9 and 10.
Studywiz can be accessed from anywhere in the world via the internet. It is a protected system accessible only with a username and password.
Studywiz provides parents with access to their child/ren's class work, homework and event calendars.
Parents may also comment on their child/ren's work. SWA parents who attended the workshop learned how to login and access the homework and curriculum overviews.
Most parents were interested in learning how to view the set homework for the week.
Questions were asked about how to find the date on the work, allowing parents to know which is the most current assignment.
SWA encourages parents to join a Studywiz Workshop to get personal assistance with accessing the system.
The next Studywiz Workshop will be next Tuesday, February 23 from 8.00-9.30 am in the library for Grades 5, 9 and 10.
Additional workshops for other grades will be held, as classes begin to use this system.
Parents will be informed about these workshops through Infobytes.
SWA TEACHERS AS IB TRAINERS
Currently the IB programmes are offered in more than 3000 schools throughout the world.
As more schools become authorized so does the need to have knowledgeable and experienced IB PYP, MYP and DP teachers to deliver workshops, conferences and carry out school visits.
SWA recognizes and appreciates the talents and experiences of teachers when it comes to delivering the IB programmes.
This year, two of our teachers, Ms. Juni and Ms. Aderini, have been selected by the IB to attend training in Thailand to become IB workshop leaders.
The training is designed to provide each selected participant with strategies, the methodology, and philosophy of the IB.
Each successful participant is then eligible to coordinate and/or lead IB workshops and conduct school visits, in any schools within the Asia Pacific region.
SWA congratulates Juni and Ade for being selected to participate in the Workshop Leader Training, and we look forward to having them contribute to the development of the PYP implementation in Asia through workshops and within the IB international community.
Currently SWA has 5 IB trainers, Mida, Jan, Frida, Robin, and Darma.
FIELD TRIP TO LENGKONG
On February 17, RiveRia visited the village of Lengkong to interview the teachers who worked at the school.
RiveRia is a community service group dedicated to teaching English to the children who live in Lengkong, a village near the Cisadane river.
We gathered together at 8.30am and thought about questions we could ask the teachers.
The questions we brainstormed were to help provide the RiveRia group with information about what to teach the children so that they can learn more effectively. Some of our questions were:
• What methods do you use to teach the children?
• How often do you teach English at the school?
• Which textbooks do you use to teach English?
After we had written all our ideas, we boarded the bus and headed for the village.
The bus journey wasn’t so smooth but we made it through branches, mud and narrow paths.
When we arrived at Lengkong, we were introduced to Pak Mubaroh, the headmaster of the school. Pak Mubaroh then introduced us to Pak Hakim, one of the English teachers at the school.
Unfortunately, the Elementary English teacher was unable to come.
We interviewed Pak Hakim who explained to us some of the problems he has with the students, what methods he uses to teach English and how he assesses them.
The interview was recorded on camera but we also took notes in our journals for future references.
After we asked enough questions, we thanked Pak Hakim and left Lengkong.
The field trip was definitely a success and the information collected will help the group become even more successful in teaching the children English.

SHARING CELEBRATIONS BRINGS US TOGETHER
“Come taste our lovely food!”
”Come learn about Vesak!”
“Come celebrate a wedding!”
The students in Grade 1 recently celebrated in the Topeng Piazza with an excellent Celebrations Fair, after looking at the beliefs, traditions, culture and celebrations of some of our near neighbours.
Each group of students set up their stall to explain their particular celebration – Christmas, Chinese New Year, Idul Fitri, Birthdays, Halloween, Weddings, Vesak, Easter.
With lots of support from eager parents they filled their stalls with food, posters, give-aways and, most of all, their knowledge.
The piazza was bursting with students, teachers and parents sharing their morning together.
SWA GIN STUDENTS HEADED TO HONG KONG
During the March holidays, 6 SWA students have been selected to represent the school at the Global Issues Network Conference in Hong Kong.
The Global Issues Network (GIN) Mission is: "To empower students to work internationally with their peers to develop solutions for global issues".
The conference brings together students, teachers, non-government organizations and government officials from around the world to discuss sustainable solutions to global issues.
Students will participate in keynotes and workshops, where they will be encouraged to share their own experiences and opinions.
As part of the conference RiveRia, an SWA student led community and service group, will be presenting the steps they have taken to set up an English language support programme for children from Kampung Lengkong.
The conference is also an opportunity for two members from our Teens Act Green (TAG) environmental group to gain insight into how other schools manage their resources in a sustainable way.

STUDENT COUNCIL SUPPORTS RURAL EDUCATION
SWA’s Student Council’s major community service project this year, has been to support Yayasan Emmanuel’s Innovative Schools Program.
This program supports teachers in local schools by providing workshops, which introduce interactive teaching methodologies into local classrooms similar to what happens in classrooms in SWA.
Mr. Rick leads this program and many SWA teachers have been involved in providing their expertise and ideas to help local teachers.
In order for this program to be successful, some of the most disadvantaged schools need resources and basic items like furniture and textbooks. One of these schools is SD Mitra, which is situated in rural Bogor.
The Student Council began by going to the school and carrying out a needs assessment, where with the help of Yayasan Emmanuel staff, students and teachers, they put together a list of urgent and essential materials.
The plan was then to raise enough funds to buy furniture (the Grade 4 class use cardboard boxes as desks), textbooks and teaching materials for the 46 students at the school.
Valentines Day provided an ideal kickoff for this major project where students and Ms. Judy painted and sold Valentines Day cards and food for the Valentine’s Day movie night.
So far they have raised almost 10,000,000 rupiah, with a new program beginning where families, teachers, and students can support individual children at SD Mitra through sponsorship.
Look out for their faces and names next week in Bamboo Court and dig deep to help these kids education.
Student Council students have come to realize through this program, that good education is really the road for a better future for the Mitra students, and really value their own educational opportunities.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS’ ASSESSMENT 2010
On Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10 many students in Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the 2010 International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) program.
These assessments are administered by ACER (Australian Council for Education Research) and are designed especially for students in international schools from Grades 3-10.
"The ISA assessment program is based on the internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the OECD's Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA)".www.acer.edu.au/isa/
In 2009 there were 110 international schools participating. The ISA assesses student achievement in English Literacy and Mathematics.
The carefully designed assessments allow schools to measure their achievements with that of the national performance levels of many countries such as Australia, Singapore, Korea and others.
Each student who participates also receives an individual report that shows how he or she performed. It is school policy that those students participating in the ESL program do not participate in the assessments.
In 2009, SWA had good results and we are expecting an equally good performance in 2010! Watch this space!
THE YEAR OF THE TIGER
The Chinese New Year assembly brought together the SWA community with participation from all grades.
The rich culture of China was the forward line to dance, song and color.
Should parents wish to purchase a DVD of the assembly please see Rita in the SWA shop.
Thank you to all teachers and families who made this event so successful. Thanks to the PTA for their ‘hong bao’ gift to all students.
