INTERNATIONAL C.B. PAUL SCIENCE QUIZ 2017, SINGAPORE
Silver and Bronze Medals
We send our warmest congratulations to all thirteen SWA MSHS student participants who travelled to Singapore this week to take part in the 39th International C.B. Paul Science Quiz 2017hosted by the Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Science and Mathematics Council (ACJC SMC) and in collaboration with the College of Science, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore (NUS). The event was an international competition that students spent months preparing for, both after school and at home. The event was open to students in Grades 7 & 8 (Category 1) and Grade 9 & 10 (Category 2). Participants were judged based on GCE “O” Level, IBDP and some university-level of understanding of Science and Mathematics topics.
Topics included but may not be limited to
| Physics (Category 1 & 2) | mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity, magnetism, and nuclear & quantum physics |
| Biology (Category 1 & 2) | cell structure, biological molecules, physiological processes in plants and humans, and DNA and genomics |
| Chemistry (Category 1 & 2) | atomic structure, stoichiometry, electrolysis, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, acid-base reactions and organic chemistry |
| Mathematics (Category 1 & 2) | algebra, geometry, counting, number theory, and calculus |
| Computer Science (Category 1 & 2) | algorithm, data structures, scientific computing and programming languages |
Our SWA student participants received awards in the following
Category 1 (Grade 7 and 8):
- 1 Silver Medal awarded to Kyra Hendarmin Husen
- 4 Bronze Medals awarded to Kim Ye Eun, Nathania Callista Chan, Daniel Sawai, Devin Liandy
Category 2 (Grade 9 and 10):
- 3 Silver Medals awarded to Vijjasena Sugiono, Sebastian David Togatorop, Edward Louis Natanael
- 5 Bronze Medals awarded to Shrinandhan Prabu, Liam Sumitro Greenbury, Tristan Dwiputra Loa, Victoria Emily Gandakusuma, Janice Chen
The student participants should be very proud of their accomplishments in this event as it was not only challenging in requiring a great deal of training and learning outside of the classroom but also unique to other academic challenges that they have faced in the past. As teachers, we are exceptionally pleased with the results and very proud of all participants who demonstrated courage, commitment and willingness to go above and beyond what is expected of them in the classroom. Some of the most important learning takes place in these types of competitions and helps students to discover that they do have the ability to overcome large challenges and allows them to develop this ability in a practical setting. Family, friends and teachers please take a moment to congratulate them and recognise their achievements in this highly competitive international competition.
