Diploma Programme Core Areas

- Extended essay
The extended essay asks students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying.
- Theory of knowledge (TOK)
Theory of knowledge develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines. In this course on critical thinking, students inquire into the nature of knowing and deepen their understanding of knowledge as a human construction.
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
CAS involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Activity seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery.
Diploma Programme Subject Choices

IB Diploma students need to select two Language courses (min. 1 from Group 1 - Language and Literature), a course from the Individuals & Societies group, a Science course, a Mathematics course, and Visual Arts or an additional subject from group 2, 3 or 4.
In Grade 12, students will normally follow 3 of their subjects at Higher Level (HL) and the remaining 3 subjects at Standard Level (SL).
Examiners appointed by the IBO assess candidates’ work in the Diploma Programme examinations and other forms of external assessment using common markschemes. This external assessment may be complemented by internal assessment by schools of other required work, moderated by IBO examiners.
Performance in each subject is graded on a scale of 1 point (minimum) to 7 points (maximum). For the IB diploma, a maximum of 3 points is awarded for combined performance in theory of knowledge and the extended essay. The maximum total Diploma Programme points score is, therefore, 45.
For each of the subjects in the DP the syllabus and assessment model are prescribed in great detail.
